The Medical Office Administration training program prepares Hunter Business School students with the skills and training necessary to provide excellent administrative support while working and playing a key role in running an efficient, productive office in a variety of medical and business environments. Through a blend of classroom instruction and practical hands-on training, students receive an in-depth education in computer data entry of patient information; patient files; filing systems and records; insurance claim filing; and billing and coding.
In addition to courses in management and computer applications, Hunter Business School students learn anatomy and physiology, health care administration, EMR (electronic medical records), insurance theory, and insurance claims management. Medical Office Administration training program students are also exposed to the different parts of Medicare, what to do in case of medical emergencies, and the legal aspects of health care, including HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) and OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Act).

During this course, Hunter Business School students are introduced to the various parts of a computer and its operation. The class includes the development of keyboarding skills through touch method, mastery of the keyboard, and typing speed building. Students progress from basic keyboarding skills to an understanding of Microsoft Word and the fundamentals of word processing. Creating professional memos and business letters are explored. Lessons include processing mail and telecommunications. Career Services participates and assists in the preparation of résumés. Prerequisite: None
Anatomy and Physiology I with Medical Terminology
MO103 (60 hours)
Hunter Business School students are provided with a comprehensive study of the human body through and explanation of the structure and functions of its parts. Starting with a basic cellular composition, each body system is examined, with emphasis on both normal and pathological processes. Systems covered include skeletal, muscular, circulatory, and respiratory.
Integrated into the study of each system is an introduction to the language of medicine. Medical terms are taught, along with their relationship to the human body. Hunter Business School students become familiar with vocabulary and word parts that help them comprehend anatomy, physiology, pathology, diagnostic techniques, and medical treatments and procedures directly related to each system. This new language is used to facilitate communication with other health care professionals about their patients. Abbreviations and medical specialties are included. Prerequisite: None
Microsoft Word Basics
MO201 (30 hours)
Microsoft Word Basics provides Hunter Business School students with the fundamentals of the most popular word processing program, Microsoft Word, and also reviews business letter formatting. The curriculum includes: the use of tabs, ribbons, and galleries; how to change page orientation; handling tools used to make corrections; methods to open, save, print, and close files; ways of moving and copying text; implementation of AutoCorrect, AutoFormat, and Spelling & Grammar; Date & Time; the Undo and Redo commands; the Thesaurus; Find and Replace commands; and all other aspects of formatting text. Prerequisite: None
Excel for Windows
MO202 (30 hours)
Excel for Windows is designed to give Hunter Business School students an understanding of spreadsheets. Course topics covered include but are not limited to: the parts of a worksheet; how to select cells; entering and editing data; searching data; saving and printing; changing the appearance of a worksheet; adding colors, borders, and cell formats; the Fill command; inserting rows and columns; formula structure; relative, absolute, and mixed cell references; and AutoSum. Prerequisite: None
Communication and Human Relations

This course give medical office administration students an introduction to patient relations in the medical office. Health care law and ethics are discussed. The class emphasizes communication skills and how to interact with physicians, other health professionals, and patients. Anatomy and Physiology II with Medical Terminology
MO204 (60 hours)
Anatomy and Physiology II continues the study begun in the first anatomy course. Body systems covered are sensory, nervous, integumentary (the skin), digestive, endocrine (the glands), and reproductive. Included is the branch of medicine and surgery concerned with childbirth and the care of women giving birth, obstetrics.

Intermediate Microsoft Word

During Intermediate Microsoft Word, Hunter Business School students continue to master the functions of this word processing program. Course topics covered include but are not limited to: setting margins; text alignment; indentation; line spacing; vertical alignment; tabs; bullets and numbering; sorting text; columns; borders and shading; the addition of graphics to a document; and the creation of diagrams and charts. Computerized Accounting Using QuickBooks
MO302 (30 hours)
QuickBooks is a popular software program commonly used to manage both personal finances and small businesses with the accounting and business management tools necessary to keep finances organized. In this course, Hunter Business School students gain the knowledge and practical understanding of the revenue and expenses features of QuickBooks. Prerequisite: None
Billing and Coding Practices
MO303 (60 hours)
Hunter Business School students are given an essential understanding of medical insurance billing. The course examines topics, such as managed care, legal and regulatory issues, coding systems, reimbursement methods, medical necessity, and common health insurance plans. Emphasis is placed on new legislation that impacts health care, including the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare); ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding (numerical identifiers for diagnoses and procedures); electronic medical records; Medicare and Medicaid; hospital acquired conditions; patient status on admission; Values-Based Purchasing; and laws and guidelines the regulate compliance. MO401 (30 hours)
In this course, Hunter Business School students learn the popular database program, Access, a component of the Microsoft Office package. Topics covered include: creating a database; editing and printing; searching; filtering and sorting; querying a database; and creating forms and reports. Prerequisite: None
Advanced Computerized Accounting Using QuickBooks

During Advanced Computerized Accounting Using QuickBooks, Hunter Business School students have the opportunity to delve deeper into the features of QuickBooks, building upon what they learned in the first course of this series. These include payroll processing, bank reconciliation, reports and graphs, and inventory control. Prerequisite: MO302
Computerized Medical Billing and EMR
MO403 (60 hours)
Course MO403 prepares Hunter Business School students to utilize computerized billing and medical software. (EMR stands for electronic medical records.) Students learn to accurately input patient demographics, procedures, and diagnoses in order to generate claims and post payments. The various forms of a typical medical office are used to compile standard insurance claim forms to bill insurance companies. Maintaining patient accounts and managing practice finances are included. The use of electronic records is introduced. Course topics covered include: creating patient records; maintaining health history data; and reading and interpreting patient files. Prerequisite: None
MO501 (30 hours)
Internet Applications introduces Hunter Business School students to the concepts and basics of the Internet and how it is used in various business settings. The class sets up, manages, and addresses e-mail properly for business use. Effective search techniques and security are discussed. Also covered with practical applications are Microsoft Outlook Calendar and Address Book. Prerequisite: None
MO503 (30 hours)
Career Development provides an opportunity for Hunter Business School students to prepare for a job search by learning and applying critical self-examination techniques for the development of a successful career and lifelong career management. Course topics include: career planning research; job searching; interview and communication skills; and the development and preparation of career search documents, such as résumés, job applications, cover letters, and thank you letters. Students are also directed in the proper use of the telephone and fax machine, employment testing, office behavior and etiquette, and the completion of online applications. Mock interviews are also conducted. Prerequisite: None
